This large rural garden sits to the rear of a newly converted barn. The clients wanted a large patio area for entertaining to complement their recently extended renovation with traditional cottage garden planting to enhance the space and soften the hard landscaping. The house and garden is to become the venue for their wedding this year and the planting had to have an immediate impact. Lighting was required to extend the use of the garden into the evening since the couple both work in the city.
The previous north facing patio had suffered badly from green algae. A combination of porcelain and granite plank paving was chosen for its low water absorption properties, eliminating green algae and reducing the need for regular cleaning. New, larger planting beds were created and a mix of herbaceous perennials, grasses, shrubs and roses were chosen to create a really beautifully balanced planting scheme, adding interest to the garden throughout the year. Ambient lighting was installed to light steps, trees and the laurel garden boundary hedge, controlled using a dusk to dawn sensor for ease of use.
